No.7: Burning Bridges.
You will always be offended.
Just
remember, there are three perspectives:
Yours,
theirs, and the third alternative – which is usually the most objective and
unbiased.
However
unfair you think management may be regarding you, it doesn’t matter. Life goes
on.
Were
you unfairly managed at your office, promotions, abroad training passed over
you, salary not increased for an inexplicable long stretch – then you get a
very much improved offer elsewhere. Don’t end relations with your now-former
office.
You
do not know what the future holds.
You
have an overbearing boss who seems very critical of everybody's work. Then you
get an improved offer elsewhere, and you disrespect this boss – after all, you
are leaving.
Good
Job!
One
year later, management announces the appointment of a new COO.
Guess
who?
That
Boss!
Bottom
line, whatever happens, professional career is a revolving wheel where
ex-colleagues at one point or the other may be re-united, usually in different
capacities; where ex-colleagues become service providers or agencies to their
ex-colleagues; where subordinates head new units and their ex - line managers
become their service provider.
Burning
Bridges simply is not a smart move, and would hurt your career and your life.
