No.8: Being Close-Minded.
Not a thing is impossible.
Whatever seems impossible today is only
misunderstood.
An open mind is one that sees the not-so-obvious,
the conceptual one that always sees the big picture. It is the elastic mind
that is open to opportunities, with a healthy risk appetite.
The open mind is not constrained to an
industry, a role, or a custom career trajectory.
Like Steve Job said: “Those who are
crazy enough to think they can change the world usually do”. Being open-minded
is not being crazy or irrational. But it is putting no limits to possibilities.
It is about knowing that things are first created internally before they come
to reality externally.
A close-minded employee who has spent
ample time in a career path, and is suddenly redeployed by management to head a
very different but smaller unit, just when promotion is due would perceive the
event as a demotion or redundant move.
The open-minded employee on the other
hand would see it as an opportunity to acquire new competences, become more
competitive, and learn enough to take on a more encompassing role in the
future.
From a wider perspective, an
open-minded person is less inclined to suffer anxiety, depression, high-blood
pressure, and all the health challenges that come from worrying, particularly
in an unpredictable society as ours. This is because; the person is constantly
seeing the ray of sunshine through every cloud of life.
So, you may not have all the answers
to life’s many questions, but if you are open-minded, you will constantly see
the options that life throws your way.
